Chapter Three

“Where are the Feds?” Jeremy asked Sam the next morning. “You didn’t let them take off into the woods by themselves, did you? Christ, they don’t know what they’re doing without a city map and radio communications.” They had found out radio reception was sporadic in the forests and hills when they’d tried to get reinforcements when Jeremy was attacked.

“They got a report of a sighting over near George. I figured that sheriff could worry about them for a day or two. What are you doing here?” Sam looked up from the weekly paper. “You were supposed to take a few days off.”

Jeremy scowled as he slumped into his chair. He had taken a day off, but after two blissful nights with Gypsy, he had woken today to find her gone, again. He figured she had to work, but his rumpled sheets smelled of sex and he quickly gave up trying to go back to sleep. Damn it, nobody had ever gotten under his skin as quickly as she had.

He had connected with Gypsy on some level he couldn’t quite understand and the problem was he found he couldn’t just have sex with her. He wasn’t normally a fanciful guy, but he had thoroughly enjoyed shopping with her and decorating his house. Childhood Christmases were dark, hazy memories that he didn’t dwell on, but he liked seeing her smile and laugh. If that meant putting up a tree and stringing lights, so be it.

Jeremy swung his feet up on his desk and looked over at Sam, a fresh-faced kid, really, just a few years out of the academy. They were getting along well although their reasons for joining law enforcement were polar opposites. Sam was a third generation deputy, hoping to follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps to become sheriff one day. Jeremy had barely escaped being on the wrong side of the law.

“Hey, you there?” Sam brought him out of his musings.

“Did you check out the bastard who knifed me?”

“Yeah. Didn’t recognise him in the dark but it was Jimbo Jones, one of the local bootleggers. He kept apologising and blubbering on about how he’d never hurt the new sheriff. He thought you were a revenue man. I let him go home this morning.”

Jeremy stared at his deputy. “Making moonshine’s illegal, the last I knew.”

Sam met his stare without flinching.

“Hell, he’s not who we’re after anyway.” Jeremy rubbed his hands over his face.

Sam scowled. “Maybe Franco did move his people over to George. The forest is denser; makes it even harder to find a hideout.”

Somehow Jeremy didn’t think so. His gut told him Thomas Franco was close. It wasn’t until this morning, when Gypsy’s scent no longer sent his brain to his cock, that he recalled their shopping excursion with some clarity.

Both the grocer and the gas station attendant had appeared nervous, almost panicky. Groceries and gas—the two things a person on the run or hiding out would need. Knowing they wouldn’t talk to him, who else might inadvertently be a source of information?
